It is a process.
First of all reset the router to factory defaults in case you have changed something accidentally.
Start from scratch
Either use their install tool or do it manually.
Take off all the settings in the intenet explorer > tools > options > connections > lan settings
uncheck all ok
to enter the control panel
in internet explorer address bar type
192.168.1.1
or http://192.168.1.1
if that will not get to the control panel try firefox
I agree it is inconsistent
You should get a control panel
name : admin
Password : is uually admin or can be blank
go to connection type
if broadband cable it is automatic
if it is broadband dsl it is pppoe
if it dsl you will need your account from the isp and the isp password for the account ( may be diffirent than your email)
next set up the connection
You may have to tell it to connect to dsl intenet connection
next set the name of the wireless network ( the ssid)
It will be set by Linksys to "Linksys" or "Wireless"
You can change it to whatever you like.
Make sure at this point the beacon is set to transmit and not off so that you can easily find your signal ( at this point in your career)
Most important thing of all is to change the channel from the default 6 to another of the 12 channels.
Channels 1 and 11 are the two next bets but it often trial and error.
You will have no end of trouble with neighbour's routers changing channels and stopping your internet connection.
You will not even see them in the Windows XP wireless utilty and they can interfere and end your intenet connection even though you think that you have a good signal strength.
Leave the encryption off at this step if you are new to this.
Once you are all set up you can go in and turn it on.
Make sure the router is high and away from clutter.
Not blocked by big heavy metal things - doors , furnaces etc etc etc.

When in doubt::
check ethernet cables are in
unplug your modem and router for a minute or so
change the channel
if you run into trouble you can always reset the router ( back is a little switch that you hold in with a pin)

setting up wireless is not easy. The salesman at big box stores do not like to selle xtended warranties on wireless as so many come back to the store as not able to set up

Use the CAT5 cable provided. Log in through the browser, check the manual for this. Set your isp details for the log in. Change the ssid, this makes it easier to separate your machine from any similar models nearby. Save the changes and wait for the router to re-start. Check that the dsl light flashes and then settles down steady, this indicates it is synchronized to the server. If this does not sync, check that you have filters in every socket with equipment connected as well as the router socket. Try the internet with the cable, if it won't work check your tcp/ip properties on the connection (all set to automatic). At this stage try the diagnosis page of the router, ping tests may fail, if pppoe is used pppoa will fail and vice versa. Any other failures will help your isp find any problems. If the cable works disconnect the cable and use the wireless utility for you card to find your ssid and connect. If this works set encryption on the router and use the utility to log on again, setting the same encryption. Post again with any further problems, giving some details of the failure.

My wireless router installed well enough for wired applications, but the wireless feature had problems. They were probably caused by the remote computer being too close to the router and overloading it. If yours works for wired but not wireless, try moving the remote machine farther away before asking it to check for Available Networks.

I'd suggest not even trying to install it and seeing what happens. Just plug all the wires into it and feed them into the computers and see if that works. If not, you should try to contact Linksys Customer Support.
