I just went to Best Buy and got an external hard drive enclosure to put in a (laptop) hard-drive so that I can get the data off of it. The problem is, the hard drive does not connect to the enclosure. Can someone tell me if I got the wrong type, or if there's a cable missing or something?

Here's the product:

In the instructions, it says to just connect the hard drive to the IDE connector on the circuit board, without cables.

I'm pretty sure on how it should be installed but I'm wondering if there are different types of laptop IDE connectors...Because the product description says it works with notebook computers (presumably all types).

Also, Yahoo shortens the link. You have to click it; copy and paste won't give the whole link.

Thanks for the help so far though, I'm pretty sure what I have to do.

Installing the hard drive
To install the hard drive into the case:
1 Remove the hard drive case from the package.
2 Remove the front cover, then remove the circuit board from the
case.
3 Plug the hard drive into the IDE connector. Make sure it is firmly
connected.
4 Insert the circuit board with the hard drive into the case.
5 Attach the front cover to the case, then tighten the screws as
shown below.
Using the drive
Connecting the drive to your computer
To connect the USB hard drive to your computer:
1 Turn on your computer.
2 Plug the USB data cable into the hard drive’s USB port and into a
USB port on your computer.
3 Plug the USB power cable into the hard drive’s DC jack and into a
different USB port on your computer.
Installing the driver
If your computer uses Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 2000, or a
Mac OS version above 8.6, you do not need to install a driver.
If you are using Windows 98SE, you must install a USB driver. The driver is
found on the CD that is included with the hard drive.

IDE cables are used for the full sized 3.5" hard drives, like for desktops.

Laptops use a smaller 2.5" drive and use a laptop version of the IDE interface.

Basically, one interface has 44 pins while the other has 40.

You might need a simple $10 adapter like http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat_id=906&sku=17705

Or take the enclosure back and get one that specifically can support both (I wanted to say "out of the box").

Generally, an external drive connects to your computer through a USB cable or FireWire. Make sure the connection method is compatible with your computer; that you have a free port to which to connect it; and that you have the appropriate cable (most often, these don't come with the hard drive).
Most hard drives come unformatted, and can thus work with both Macs and PCs. Make sure that this is the case, though, before you make your purchase.

This is probably more what you want. It will adapt laptop IDE, SATA and regular IDE to USB for easy data removal. Laptop IDE connection is different than IDE or SATA
