Few evenings ago I attended my 14 yr. old son's open house. Was married 23 yrs., now divorced 4 yrs and am very happy with my life and choice I made to divorce my ex. On rare occasions a function, like an open house, will come up and we'll attend together as a family. Though he and I are overall fine with with each other...unless related to kids, my ex and I share no contact...I like it that way.

When outside one of my son's classrooms my former husband introduced me as his wife. I just looked at him and said mildly yet clearly..." Excuse me ? " He then repeated the same. I just gave him a very clear stern " look ". He replied with " Oh sorry ". I told him later in private that by his behavior during our marriage, my being his wife was a privlage that he lost and to never make the mistake of referring to me as his wife again. That's a privlage for a man to call me that.

Why would a man refer to his ex as his " wife " after they've been divorced over four years ? !

Well, maybe the thought of divorce embarrassed him in the "family oriented" setting you were in...

but the bigger question is... why didn't YOU ask him right then and there when you were in private?

How bout if he said... "This WAS my wife" ...he he

(seriously... i think you need to get over it... or yourself...he he)

Maybe it was a habit. Maybe it was just easier since you were all together. Maybe it was just a slip, or maybe he wishes you weren't divorced. Many reasons.

I, on occasion, will call my ex my husband, just for the sake of argument, sometimes its just not worth explaining. Sometimes its accidental, habit. I am remarried to the love of my life, and dont want ANYTHING to do with the ex, but it happens.

Some couples get divorced and still call each other husband and wife. It could have been a mistake when your ex called you his wife. Don't take it so hard.

The event obviously got under your skin I would say that he was most likely a little embrass to admit that he was longer with you to a stranger or failing that just playing family for a while so that he could feel a little 'normal' if only for a moment.

I think he just did it because it was easier than saying "ex-wife" to people you don't know. Nobody needs to know your business. My guess is that's all it was about.

he's trying to be cutesy in front of the teacher. he is living in a false reality and is trying to play you again. "she's my wife" even though the truth is that you are no longer that for him

Maybe he's too ashamed to admit to someone that you left him?

Pretty obvious, isn't it? Wishful thinking.
