And also, should they? What I mean is will the fish eat the Daphnia and get sick?

I want to clean my little (2") Goldfish's aquarium (16 gallons) of green water algae. Read that I can do this by introducing Dahnia into the tank. Will my Goldfish eat them? If so how can I protect the Daphnia long enough for them to do the job?

Thanks to you all.

Yes, the goldfish will eat ( and love) the daphnia far before they would get the water clear of algae. It wouldn't harm the goldfish at all and in fact daphnia are a great food for many fish including goldfish.

For the green water I would suggest you control it by starving it of the two things it needs: nutrients i the water and light. Be sure no sunlight shines into your tank and that you keep the lights on for a maximum of 10 hors a day. The fish don;t really need the light on, so just running it when you are there to enjoy the tank is a good idea.

You can massively reduce the nutrients in the water with water changes and gravel cleanings. Use a gravel siphon to clean the gravel as you remove at least 25% of the water from the tank. Replace the water with fresh dechlorinated water. Do this once a week and you will see the green water disappear within a few weeks. It will also provide a more healthy environment for your fish. If you already do this then increase the amount of water you change each week to as much as 50% and be very careful to clean the gravel very well all the way to the bottom of the tank each week.

goldfish eat everything, even daphnia, i give mine daphnia and earthworms along with cereal, small bits of chicken turkey ham and beef and all sorts of finely chopped vegetables. Try buying a pleco or 2 or some other algae eaters that will survive in the cold water with your goldies. Also you can buy an algae treatment, but read instructions carefully. Also try leaving your light on only for a couple of hours a day as this will minimise algae growth and keep your aquarium out of direct sunlight as this promotes algae growth.

you would need a lot of daphnia to clear the algae, and yes the fish would certainly eat them with gutso. if your aqurium is situated near a window then move it, best to stand water that has been declorinated in a bucket at room temp, every week to do water changes

people will get mad at me because it is abusing the medicine by you can kill off your algae with a treatment of maracyn -- a fish anitibiotic.
