explain all these use of first letters of the words. I'm not that old and can figure out some but most of them make me feel as if I'm rapidly aproaching senility

Thanks for the help I may now be able to understand most of the answers when I ask a question

It's almost the same as shorthand. Not everyone uses them but those who do it usually do it because it's faster than typing out everything.

I'll put as many as I know..

jk - just kidding
rotfl - rolling on the floor laughing
lmao - laughing my a s s off
nfw - no f***ing way
lol - laughing out loud
ns - nice OR nice shot
lmfao - laughing my f***ing a s s off
ur - your/you're
u - you
omg - oh my god/gosh
imo/imho - in my [honest/humble] opinion
gg - good going
gtg/g2g - got to go (or in games, good to go)
bb - bye bye
wtf - what the f***
btw - by the way
y - why (kind of obvious)
idc - I don't care
idk - I don't know
dc'ed/dc - disconnect/ed

There are more but those are most commonly used that i've seen anyway.

Thank you for asking that question! I wrote the ones down that I didn't know, at least the ones that I wanted to know! And then there is (ppl...people). I didn't see that one, and I just figured it out all on my own! I don't use them personally because I don't know if the person that I am answering knows them or not, and I like to get my answer across in a way that others can understand. It takes me longer to try and figure out the abbreviations than it does to read proper words! And really I don't think it would save me much time using them either. Don't worry, I don't think you are approaching senility yet! I hope not, because if you are , then I probably am, and I refuse to admit that yet! (smile)

How can we explain what we don't know? These questions often rob themselves of the best answers they could get as we might just have to just say: "Next!" and go on! and consider others with a little more consideration behind it! After all, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right! so that others can also read it! We all reap what we sow! And what goes around comes around! So I don't break my head much about it! We're all free to be who we want to be... That's how God made us! With the choice to decide what we believe is best for us! Blessed are the ones who follow His guidance for how to live the best a human can possible live! and act! and think! and love! and write!!!
EDIT
I must say thank you to all who did their best to explain "text messaging". And they might try to remember that this is Yahoo Answers and the rules don't apply in the same as it costs nothing to spell the words here and more people get to understand them! I suppose some might only want answers from their peer! In which case, that's a different story altogether! Peace to one and all!

Which ones? They save typing time. Most you'll see frequently are noted...

LOL is laugh out loud
ROTFL rolling on the floor laughing
IMHO in my honest/humble opinion
LMAO laughing my aXX off
BC because
U - you
UR - you are or your
NFW - no f'n way
effn - fXXXXg

And there are many, many more. It's just another lingo - like talking to doctors or physicists.

Tell me! I just copied 'text lingo' to my computer and it's really confusing. Some is easy - bc meaning because or bf meaning boyfriend or best friend, depending on the context. Others are really confusing, like AYSOS means are you stupid or something. Go figure!

its comes from "texting"... where the lingo used to have been formed to get around message content charges... IE.. you were charged "per character" for sending text messages.

Then it became per message..... and now many cellphone companies are offering "unlimited" flat fee texting.

You wont see the lingo change though.... as it is faster to abbreviate... than to spell it out...
