well it's is well enough but keep in mind not to run many applications at the same time
or many browser windows just like i do :)
if you have a chance, upgrade the RAM and enjoy more ;) (win98 is adviced)
last note, DO NOT use a modem through USB, because with this configuration USB will cause much problem
buy an ethernet card and connect via that interface

yes no problem there, you will need to have an ether net card and cable in the computer that couples to the internet modem
people think that you need to have a fast computer to go on the internet, thats is not so though you do need a fast internet connection if your on dial up.
if your on broad band it will be fast enough for surfing the internet, don't forget that when that computer came out it was fast
wow how fast it was then and it is still the same today

though you did not mention the operating system
256Mb is ok for 98
but not enough for xp
you need at least 512Mb
it will browse, a bit slow, but it will browse no problem

install freebsd or something and it will work a treat,
256 is good ennough for XP,
but 512 is needed for vista
