If there is a global calamity coming, and after that people would kill for a slice of bread, rape & robbery would be commonplace as well as general hatred and meanness, well, would you stay to live through it just because or just take a few sleeping pills and lie out in the snow to freeze "peacefully"?

It seems that your question is really would you want to live through.
Well, lets look at this interesting question this way. The person who tried to warn Mexico City of the 1985 earthquake found next to no willing ears. The man even went to the United Nations with his calculations, all to no avail. Now some 22 years later, he has calculated that there will be another of similar strength for May 24, 2007 also for Mexico City. This is to be over 8.0. Suppose that you were living in this +26 million population city, would you plan to be out of town for that day? Seriously! I would not choose a nearby beach either in case of zsunami action.
Personally, I believe that I am living in a very safe city geologically speaking, tornado wise, or hurricane wise. I feel confident. I plan to hold vigils at various times during the night starting wednesday night at midnight and throughout the day where I will be meditating and visualizing loving energy aimed at this location. IMO this is the least I can do. As a human being, I have nothing to lose. Negative outlooks can only attract negative outcomes. I prefer my way, thanks.

There's already global calamities in this world much like those you propose. Life goes on in those places with moments of happiness, laughter, love and hope.

I'd push on, as long as I had a breath to breathe. Hope springs eternal.

Peace

When the big asteroid comes, it'll happen so fast, you won't have time to think about it.

Geez, the things you mentioned are commonplace now, I think the earth needs the big asteroid, so we can start from scratch.
