But what is it that makes us love it so much? We all complain about the weather, government etc etc etc, but most of us still prefer it to anywhere else. What, in your opinion, makes us feel that way?

To the people from other countries, I didn't mean to make you feel excluded, it's just I'm British. If you want to talk about your country, submit a question, don't spam this one.

It is our God given right as a British citizen to complain until the cows come home. Just look at the British person on holiday - in sandals and socks, solidly determined not to have a good time. We are a nation of moaners, but if it comes to the crunch (like a foreigner insulting our country) we'll defend it to the last.

It's possibly our self-defferential nature still coming through, we all like to say our country's rubbish, the NHS doesn't work, transport is terrible - but if you compare it to other people's it's actually pretty good.

If it was really that bad, we'd either not have the freedom to complain publically, or be too busy trying to survive.
Britain is pleasant and free enough to give us time to enjoy a good moan (World Champion for life: Nigel Mansell).

And few moan better than the British Squaddie.
In March 2003 Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon reported British troops were in control of Umm Qasr, "a port city like Southampton". It was later alleged a British soldier complained: "He's either never been to Umm Qasr or never been to Southampton. There's no beer, no prostitutes and people are shooting at us. It's more like Portsmouth."

Britain is not crap! (Crap - an Americanism).

We have a vibrant economy, a diverse and eager cultural mix of people. We have a tremendous sense of humour - from the banalities of thge Cockney school of thought right through to the satire of Paul Merton and Private Eye.

We have the most resurgent food culture in Europe (Ok - I'm a chef) - Ainsley Harriott, Antony Worral Thompson and their ilk are transforming home cuisine, and Gordon Ramsay rivals Shakespeare in cultured invective-I'm told that the chap can cook as well, but I can't afford to eat in his caff.

If the ethnic minorities who have settled here could fully embrace the fact that the white Britons are prepared to accept their culture as an integral part of a diverse Nation then we would have most of our problems sewn up and sorted.

We do have problems - we pay too much benefits to the work-shy, we tax the lower-paid to subsidise scum, we have to sort out the fast-food and rap sector of society. This can be achieved by the simple expedient of bringing out a bill of rights and responsibilities (Gordon Brown -take note)

If we can sort out what our rights are, and be given directions as to what our civic responsibilites are, Britain would be great again. The citizens are doing their best - all we need now is leadership.

Britain in my eyes, is the Greatest Country in the world bar none.Americans think and go around openly saying that their land is good.Contrary as Al Murray says "Where would we be with too many rules? Germany"." Where would we be without rules ? France" and "Where would we be, were you were forced to have a lie down in the afternoon ? Spain". You carry on trying to find something better and I'll stay in Good Old England. Considering a lot of Brits condemn England, just look at all the different races that swarm here, so it must have something and I know what CHARACTER,and CHARISMA,and OLDE WORLDE CHARM
EDUCATIONAL CAPITAL of THE WORLD. HURRAH for ENGLAND

I dont think Britain is crap, I think the British are just good at moaning. I love england but didn't realise it until I moved away. It a beautiful place with great scenery, loads to do, generally a really polite and friendly society, with enough freedom and movement to do whatever we like.

Britain is not crap, we just live in a society where people are ungrateful and never happy with what they have; saying it's the country's fault makes them feel better about their own wretched lives.

People complain about everything anywhere, even if its next to perfect. You love it because you're used to it, its where you've lived. If you're going to complain about something, its at least nice to complain about things you've always lived with than with different and foreign complaints.
