There were 2 servicemen in my town who got killed
in the line of duty...how come the flag was not lowered
for them? Is it because we have no respect for them
once they are dead? Any other town have this disgusting
lack of respect also?

*And I live in a Republican Red State :(

Only if it's a school shooting does that happen. Apparently our Troops and their sacrifices (including those of their families) aren't important enough?

I know how you feel and you have my sympathy =(

Because soldiers do not matter to the government. What matters is some intangible "victory", opinion polls, money and power. The average person is as insignificant as an amoeba compared to the might of the state. If the flag was lowered for every soldier that died, even for just a day it would be at half mast FAR more often than at full. This would bring the losses of the war too close to home, and so it will not happen.

This is wrong. They should show respect. But it won't happen.

Lowering the flag would be an admission of the tragedy of the war. The government needs the public image of the conflict to remain as positive as possible and any image that may tarnish public opinion would be rejected, especially something as striking and prevalant as a flag at half-mast.

The choice to half-staff the flag for local soldiers killed in battle is a local choice.

If you feel their sacrifice is lessened by not lowering the flag you will empower yourself and many others in your city by demanding a city council declaration or ordinance to pay this tribute to fallen heroes.

The downside of this effort might be people demanding you run for mayor as you are the only person with the guts to stand up to incumbents who only know how to service the President with their lips!

Because the angels have whisked their shrapnel-ridden corpses to sweet Jesus as the saintly and patriotic hordes of heaven shout their praises for defending the profits and power of the owners of Plantation America. Wake up, America... who cares about the g-d- flag!

It would be a disgusting lack of respect to lower the flag when a solider dies.... our flag is a symbol of our country- they fought and died for that country voluntarily so that we could raise our flag high... think about it... one of the most famous pictures in American History... was worn torn soldiers, using all their strength left to raise the American Flag.... We have never lowered the Flag for soldiers- they wouldn't want us too -it would dishonor them to do anything else but raise in high in the air

Here are other comments I found that might give you a differnet prospective about what the flag really stands for and why we should not fly it half mast for soliders-think about what our flag actually stands for

I don't want to lower my flag as I feel those in service fight and some die so that the Stars and Stripes can fly high.

The flag should fly high and bright so that we all remember all the great things it stands for like bravery and FREEDOM, this country won't give in or back down !!!

I think it does sound better to fly it high and it would be awesome to put a banner or something under it. I suppose thats what the yellow ribbons are for.

Why not try to design a banner such as the POW-MIA flag that a lot of people fly beneath the Stars and Stripes? I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate it.

My flag is raised every morning, and flies at it's highest for all to see and a beacon for our brothers and sisters in uniform. It is a symbol of strenghth and honor.

That's sad... It's like how the government won't let the press photograph the flag-covered coffins that come home, because they're afraid it will hurt America's morale--as if it isn't hurt enough already!

I guess you don't know the words to the "Star Spangled Banner." Check out the lyrics. War is savagely cruel. Still, it can not be fought with our heads down. Ever thing has a time and season.
