stomach to sleep since he was born, and now he is 5 weeks old. If I put him on his back he will either cry and turn himself over to his stomach. Is it ok? Am I a bad mother?

Your not a bad mother, but try putting him on his side to sleep. They make a wedge which keeps them on his side. Dont feel bad, my youngest son slept in his swing for three months because thats the only place he would sleep.

Don't worry about it....if you're a bad mom, then I am too and I know i'm not. Both of my children have always slept on their stomachs. My son was a full term 9 pounder and my little girl was three weeks early and weighed 6 pounds. Don't let people scare you into believing the SIDS thing...in reality, no one knows what causes sids. Researchers are now saying a potential virus. Tummy sleeping is just a risk factor because they claim that since they told parents to keep their kids on their backs years ago the sids rate has been reduced, but there's no proof that it's not related to something else. I told my pediatrician that my daughter slept on her stomach and she said that was fine. If your son can lift his head to the side, then he should be all right... like everyone else said, just make sure there's not things in the bed that can suffocate him and just check on him a lot. My baby is now 4 months old and she's doing great sleeping on her tummy. We had a real problem with her sleeping on her back because of those baby "jerky" movements that would wake her up, so we put her on her tummy and she sleeps so much better. You can also try swaddling him...for some reason, my four month old daughter still loves to be swaddled...her dad says, "burrito time" and she smiles. But, no, you're not a bad mom!!! Good luck!!!

Since he can turn over by himself, that is fine. Don't put him to sleep in a position that isn't comfortable, would you like someone to move you onto your back when you are comfy on your tummy? It's the same for baby.
I was told that if the baby is choosing the sleep position, it's okay to let them choose to slepp on their stomachs...but until they choose their position, then they should be put on their backs.

You are NOT a bad mom!

Well, you are taking a risk by allowing him to sleep on his stomach. Studies prove that SIDS has gone down because of the campaign to educate new parents on putting their child to sleep on their backs. Can you live with yourself if anything ever happened to your child while he was sleeping on his stomach? I don't think that would be an easy thing to live with.

that's advisable to attempt putting him down for a nap faster, earlier he exhibits signs and indicators of being overtired. So in case you have him on a collection nap time, pass it up 10 minutes. If he nonetheless cries, day after today pass it 20 minutes in the past. He could desire to easily be changing his nap time table. in case you think teething, get some teething pills. Hylands has homeopathic ones that are risk-free at this age.

Both of my girls did the same thing. They would only sleep on their stomachs.
But both of them from about a week old could move their head side to side. Which made me feel better.
Good Luck, it will be fine. Just keep a closer watch over your precious one.

You are not a bad mother. My kdis slept on there stomach too, doctrs just have a scare of SIDS when baby's seep like that. Make sure that you are paying very close attention to your baby and if anything scares you go in and rub his back to make sure he is still ok, he will go back to sleep after you are calm. Dont worry though.

its not good because the risk of SIDS. i recommend to get the AngelCare monitor. It is WONDERFUL! it monitors baby's sleep and if baby stops moving for some reason for 30 seconds (not breathing) it sounds an alarm. It was $100 but the best thing i ever bought for my little girl. Peace of mind is wonderful

That back to sleep thing is just bull crap. I got 4 boys and they always slept on their tummies. if he is in the crib, than no blankees bigger than him their with him. Just check on him if you think anything is wrong. Make sure his head is to the side during sleep. On his back, the baby will only be able to see the ceiling. If you place him on his side, he will roll to his back or front on his own. This will aloud him to get used to getting comfortable on his own. You are not a bad mother. Bad mothers just do and don't ask.

the best position is on their side. you don't want to lay a baby down on their back because if they spit up they can choke and on their tummy they can suffocate with the sheets. you also don't want big pillows and stuffed animals around their faces for the same reason. on their side they have a clear airway and if they do spit up it goes out the side of their mouth. however, once your baby is at the stage that he can turn his head, his tummy should be ok but still make sure there's nothing around his head and i think it's also better because on their back, they get that bald spot on the back of their head.
