Whenever I hear something sad or bad about someone or something, I get extremely depressed and then these horrible images run through my head. Then I get angry and sick to my stomach. It's become almost obsessive and has serious effects on my mental health. What should I do?

You have to lighten up, if you cannot do this on your own then get professional help. Of course there is always going to be bad news in the media and in life. If you look around you there's also a lot of good news. Try to concentrate on the positive side of life and realise that there is nothing you can do about the bad things which happen. If you continue on the road you are walking at the moment it's all too easy to end up with a breakdown. Do please seek help before it gets that far. Above all never think you are on your own plenty of us have been there and come through it. Good Luck.

Try to get some exercise every day. Carry something on a card that you can repeat to yourself when bad "tapes" start playing in your head. Have a good healthy volunteer project going on all the time. If these things don't work, get to a doctor. You may be fighting a chemical imbalance.

that is an interesting predicament. sounds like you cant control that part of you that is just you. the main thing i would think to tell you is life is not fair and it isn't always pretty. life passes us by and we only see a very small percent of it. if you drowned yourself in unhappy images and stories then the resulting factor can lead to depression.

with life comes death and with death come rebirth it is the natural order of things.

and if you think you are going to see happy stories in the media forget it the media is all about shock value there is no caring there.

take a break form the news and newspapers just live life as if nothing else is happening around you. concentrate on what you want to do to make yourself happy (yep i said it be conceded).

I'd say seek professional help and if someone is about to tell you something sad just stay out of the conversation. if your reading sad things in the newspaper or seeing them on the TV don't read the article or change the channel
