VGA is the abbreviation of Video Graphics Array. It is one of the early computer display standards. It was developed by IBM. A VGA display (i.e. a computer monitor capable of displaying text and graphics according to the VGA specification) could display graphics at a resolution of 640 X 480 pixels. Newer standards like SVGA (Super VGA - 800 X 600 pixels), XGA (eXtended GA - 1024 X 768 pixels) and SXGA (Super XGA - 1280 X 1024 pixels) have outphased the VGA display standard.

Video Graphics Array.

First specified by IBM in 1987 for the new PS/2 computers.

up to 640 by 480 with 16 colours.
720 by 400 text mode
640 by 400 16 colours
640 by 350 16 colours.
320 by 240 16 colours or 256 colours.

You were allowed to define the 16 colours using the 256 colour palette, so there were some tricks that could be done to make it look like you had more than 16 colours on the screen.

The specification also defined the pin out of the 15 pin, high density D shell connector used for the video signal to the monitor.
