Julie I use CCleaner as it is very safe and will clean all your junk files on your HDD, plus will clean up issues on your registry and back the cleaned keys to our documents. I have never needed to use the backup of registry keys cleaned. This programs never makes any mistakes.

You need a firewall that protects you from rogue incoming packets and also protects your data from leaving your pc without your permission. I use the free home for personal use. Zone Alarm. http://www.zonealarm.com Download their home free for personal use.

Here are other security programs I have used for a very long time and they are safe.

Here are program I use that will give you 100% protection. Ofcourse you must also have all your critical updates installed from Microsoft.

Antivirus program I use. You only pay a one time fee of $29.99. and you get all updates and all new versions for life.

Read the webpage and if you like what you read this is the antivirus of choce I have used for over ten years and never one virus.

By culture the Chinese are very secret just about everything and that includes their software.

This antivirus program out of Beijing, China that is also used by the Government of China.

This antivirus program does not have the Govt. permission to be rated with all other known antivirus programs.

What I can assure you is that you pay only a one time fee for life that will include all auto updates, and all new versions for life. The Chinese don't believe in having to pay an annual fee for updates or new versions.

I can tell you their technology is light years ahead of any other known antivirus software out there.

If you open a webpage and there is a hidden virus it will clean in realtime. Anything that you download and has even a trace code, it will kill the download and ask you to upload the trace code for investigation. In real time the upload will tell you if it is clean or not.

Will not allow you download, Real Player, because there is a hidden file that is a trojan keylogger. The file was uploaded and traced back to the United States Army, Intelligence Services out of London, England. (Removal of the file Real Player will reject the installation).

Read for yourself at their webpage. I have never had one virus in ten plus years. Plus it will catch any progam with it's dynamic defense system, for software that you download and it does not have a publisher or lic., included.

Twister Trojan Antivirus V7

Very low on resources with scanner running in background.

If you prefer not to pay and wish to have a free antivirus program download the free AOL Active Virus Shield, powered by Karpersky engine Russia.

Antispyware I use three. You can only use one antivirus program or you will have serious conflict with your system.

Superantispyware, known to find what all other anitspyware will miss. http://www.superantispyware.com

A2Squard Malware out of Austria. Download their free version and you will be protected from, rogue dialers, worms, malware, keyloggers, trace spyware and rouge cookies.

AdAware SE Personal out of Sweden. This antispyware company has been around since computers became commerical. In June of this year they will come out with a brand new version. Right now it is beta testing. Download their free home for personal use. http://www.lavasoft.com

All of these program I have listed for you use little or no resources.

You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C

First open CCleaner
Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.
To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:
Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.
Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.
afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.
The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.
If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)
The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).
Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.
Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.

CCleaner is basically a dedicated cleaner which cleans the unwanted files in your computer...for eg. when you download or open any file or site, at many places it is registered in your computer that is not needed by the computer to work.....its a wonderful software that frees unwanted space...
Norton is basically a dedicated anti-virus.....
I sugess to still install CCleaner..

Download it and it installs in the recycle bin be careful what you tick before you run this program i.e install Yahoo toolbar which you don't need if you've already got or want it untick/tick this option, when deleting don't delete prefetch data advanced mode also untick security program you have in utilities column i.e norton before you do a scan .Fix issues you can save a log file of fixed programs

As soon as you connect to the Internet you start downloading files into the folder Temporary Internet Files. In the space of a few minutes you download 100's of files and objects. Every webpage you look at is actually on your local C drive because it has been downloaded into Temporary Internet Files and reassembled by your web browser.

ccleaner.com is a safe site to download from. You can use cclean with Norton. I would consider getting Zone Alarm, Adaware, Spybot, and AVG at www.cnet.com to replace Norton, they work much better, free and don't hug your resources.
