To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
I couldn't stop reading it.
I also liked Animal Farm by George Orwell
not 1984 though. That book sucked.

1984, by George Orwell. It's the most shocking, twisting, dark book you'll ever read. It'll change your life outlook. You thought metal gear solid was good? You'll love this book, it's an absolute must. Also recommended is it's short precursor Animal Farm.
Another fantastic book is Philip K Dick's "A Scanner Darkly", but maybe when you're a little older. If you like Harry Potter, I would recommend the superior "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Phillip Pullman, the first of which is named "the Golden Compass", and Lian Hearne's "Across The Nightingale Floor".

I love books written by black authors
two of my favorite books are 72 Hour Hold by Bebe Moore Campbell which is about a mother and her 17 year old bipolar daughter.. i like it b/c it shows bipolar disorder from the perspective of an African American and its just a great book
i also love this book called Flyy Girl by Omar Tyree which is about a black girl growing up in the 80's. its a great book for African American teen girls i think even though it can be very sexual at times.. its the real deal and it teaches you some valuable lessons ... but its not for everyone... you kinda have to be mature otherwise you wont get the right message

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. A very good book, told from the point of view of a schizophrenic Native American man (his father a chief, his mom a caucasian) about a mental hospital. A guy named McMurphy comes to the ward and creates a scene. I highly suggest it.

Perelandra, by C.S. Lewis. A man gets taken to Perelandra(the planet Venus) which is just starting, and he meets the queen, who is Venus's Eve. The Devil also comes, and tempts her to do the forbidden thing, and it's the man's job to stop her and save Venus from sin. Don't read it if you don't like philosophy.
