The Exorcist, or Hostel, because of how detailed it was, The Exorcist was based on a true story too, so of course you cant beat that. Also The Exorcist was directed in studio 666, and while directing a few crew people and the directors dog died, Sleepaway Camp was also creepy

I'll go with Jaws, even though it no longer has quite the visceral impact it did upon its release. Silence of the Lambs was amazing, but more suspenseful than outright scary.

Jaws changed the way thousands (if not millions) of people viewed swimming at the beach and forever altered our consciousness and emotional reactions. The shark may look fake these days, but tell me another movie that truly scared people well after the movie was over!

I was a little kid when I saw the first Nightmare on Elm Street movie and it scared the bejesus out of me.

Also, the Excorcist frightens me even as an adult because it was based on a true story.

The "exorcist", hands down.

Another movie that was kind of scary was Salem's lot...I remember laying in my bed at night as a kid thinking that there was a vampire floating outside of my window...
