The Smart has a 3 cylinder 700cc (0.7 litre) engine and has seats at a conventional height.

Its worth pointing out that if you have limited mobility, the charity Motability actually recomnend the Smart Fortwo.

Although it depends on exactly what year you are looking at. The Honda Accord ranges from a 2.2L 4cyl to a 3.0L 6cyl. Their 2.2 is a very quick, stong little engine, and the 3.0 despite the size is very economical. The Nissan Altima runs with a 2.2L 4cyl, although you can find the newer ones with a small 6cyl. Both have good ground clearance and the seats are slightly elevated, so getting in and out is very easy and comfortable. My personal fav is the Accord you have more options available, their engines are easier to modify and really tough. Plus they are cheaper on repairs, than the Nissan.
There are a few more out there but these are the two I suggest they are both very dependable vehicles even up into the and over 100k mile mark.

I'm going to guess that you're perhaps elderly or you have back / joint problems? So on that basis try taking a look at the Ford Fusion. It's basically a Ford Fiesta but jacked up by a few inches. Sort of a soft-roader kind of thing. Never sold too well so you'll be able to pick up a bargain second hand.

Other things to check out would be Vauxhalls Mini MPV, the Meriva and Honda's HRV (the one that looks like it has a spoiler built in to the roof). They're both pretty compact and available with 1.2 engines (vauxhall) and 1.6 on the Honda.

I've got a peugeot 106 and it's great, small engine 1123cc and it's not low down at all to get into. I have the XL model and 4 doors.

I think you can probably get a second hand one for about £2-£5k these days.

I have a funky little Peugeot 1007 MPV - it has electric sliding doors so is very easy to get in and out of, and the 1.4S diesel does 65 mpg [urban] with a £35 road tax and is great fun to drive, it also won 5 stars in the NCAP safety test !
