As someone else said they believed that good Hindus were supposed to take care of a at least one cat in their lifetimes. If you think about it, cats can be very beneficial to a population by getting rid of rats and other vermins/insects that could cause havoc in crops or the home. In Egypt, cats were supposedly so highly regarded that if someone even accidentally killed a cat they would receive the death penalty. Egypt also had two feline goddesses, one being Mafdet and the other Bast.

I believe cat's know they are lucky and occasionally allow their people to share in that luck. This is true in every culture the cats have allowed to have contact with them.
