If your bedside lights are plugged in to a socket, you need an 'in line' dimmer switch, Ikea, (maybe!!) or Lutron have them. If they are wired into the house wiring, then you need to change the light switch for a dimmer switch. Or put a lower wattage bulb in!

Is your lamp a two wire connector? Take the dimmer (if a portable one ) and open the back where the wire connects. Put one wire from the lamp to one of the dimmer clips, screw lock, etc. Then the other lamp wire to the other dimmer wire. Got that? Close up the dimmer and place it where you can reach it. Done.

You should wire an outlet to operate off of the Dimmer and plug the lamp into this. In fact, you can run just half of the outlet off of the dimmer and the other half of the outlet regular so that the entire outlet is not dimmed ...this way you control the lamp as desired, and still have full functional use of the outlet for other devices.

What you want is known as a point of use dimmer switch. See the following instructional, there are several options which may be used to suit your needs, including lamps which have built-in dimmers.

They sell light dimmer switches at the home depot or lowes. You just plug your lamp into the dimmer thing and then plug it into the wall. It comes with a slider that allows you to control how bright your lamp will be and even turn it off.
This is the one that we have: http://www.shopping.com/xPC-Lutron_Lutron_TT_300NLH_WH_White_Manual_Lamp_Dimmer

First of all you need to plug your lamp into the outlet that is controlled by a switch on the wall.
Most rooms have a plug-in that is turned off and on by a wall switch.
Next you need to buy a dimmer switch (very inexpensive) at any hardware store, and replace the switch that is currently on your wall.
This is a very easy job...... FIRST DISCONNECT THE ELECTRICITY!......Then connect like-wires to like wires. .....green to green....Red to red....so forth.
...and Waaa Laaa! You now have a dimmer switch for your lamp.

Buy a dimmer. Follow the instructions. Or just get a lower wattage bulb.

It can be 120 V with no adjustment. Use a low watt bulb. Go to Home Depot and look in the lighting section. They have a variety of lights to choose from. The lower in watts you go the softer the light. They might have regular cabinet lights. Have fun looking.
