OK. I turn key and everything sounds normal, but it just doesn't start. The engine won't turn over. I may try new spark plugs...will that work?

I really appreciate your help. I have had trouble starting the car off and on for a few weeks. I bought fuel injector cleaner last weekend (that didn't work). It always truns eventually, but now it won't at all. I don't want to ruin the battery. It is a 96 Nissan Maxima. I see the fuel line pulley working when my son pushes the gas pedal.

Let someone crank the engine for you. While doing this, pull your # 1 spark plug wire and place it close to that spark plug (note: I know you will get a shock, please wear gloves) . If there is no spark, most likely that your ''''coil pack''''is bad. If you do have spark, maybe that your idle crank sensor is bad... It is located beside the front of the engine (pulley)...

Engine turns while the starter works but engine won't start up?
Your question is confusing??
ADDED:
"Won't start" is pretty vague. It could be hundreds of posibilities.
Dead battery, Low battery, bad ground wire to engine, bad power wire to starter, bad power wire to battery, bad connection at battery post or terminals, blown fuse, bad key switch, bad starter, bad fuel pump, bad injectors, out of gas, neutral safety switch, seized engine, broken connecting rod, no compression, no spark, bad oil pressure switch, broken timing belt, plugged fuel filter, bad starter solenoid, bad starter, broken rotor, cracked distributor cap, Anti-theft device, water in/on engine, out of gas, vacuum leak, bad gas, bad ignition coil, blown computer, ...
I could list 50 more things easiy...
When you turn the key to start it, what happens?
Could you be a little bit more specific??

Several times a day, someone asks a very similar question to your's.
It's very helpfull to include a little more information in your question to help us, help you, in your times of trouble.
Some of the simple things to include in your question is:
1) Year of car.
2) Make of the car.
3) Model of your car.
Those three things can help us narrow down known issues with particular vehicles that have certain problems that occur on a regular basis. (ie. recalls and such)
Next, If you could give a more detailed explanation of what is happening when you turn the key to start your car.
1) Nothing happens?
2) You hear a "click", but nothing else?
3) You hear the starter turning, but the engine doesn't turn?
4) The starter turns the engine, but the engine won't start up?
5) The engine turns over, but very slowly.
6) the engine turns, but there's an awful banging noise?
Lastly:
What happened last time you drove it?
1) Drove home fine last night, just won't start today?
2) Was driving fine, and it just died on you?
3) You haven't driven it in a while. It's been parked in storage?
I like to say: "The better the question, the better the answer"
It might be a good idea to ask another question with better information.
The better the question: The better the answer.

what exactly is it doing? cranks over but won't start? cranking real slow? have you had your battery tested? your alternator has nothing to do with starting the vehicle. your alt. only works after the vehicle is running.
edit: also, i've had some starting problems with a mustang i used to own, and it turned out my smog pump was slowly going out (which made it harder for the starter/battery to turn over the motor when trying to start it), and it finally locked up (making a lound squealing noise).
more details will help.

this is confusing. are you saying that the engine cranks over (when you are holding the key to start it), and it just won't start? or are you saying that it won't crank over at all?

Hand brake seized on if you mean the wheel is locked, usually caused by damp conditions and the car not being used for a couple of days.
