Negitive Effects?

Question

What are some negative effects of advertising?

I already have that it increases obesity and substance abuse...but what else (NEGATIVLY) does it effect?

It negatively impacts the pocketbooks of parents who dole out billions of dollars for things that their kids would probably be better off not having. By doing this, I think it also sends the message to children that the acquisition of things is the paramount goal in life.

It causes people to waste money on things they really don't need. For example, why does one "need" a $700 designer handbag or a $100 pair of designer jeans when much cheaper varieties serve the same purpose and often look nearly identical to the designer styles?

I think that advertising also helps to engender a mentality of keeping up with the Joneses. Some recent TV commercials are perfect examples of this.

I'm sure there are many others, but I shall now defer to others to provide them.
