In baseball why do you go right to 1st instead of left to 1st?

The current rules of baseball have changed over the years, but the rules were first codified by Henry Chadwick, long before the first organized baseball league. Even then, the game was played by running counter-clockwise. It's just one of those things that has been around for so long that it's origins have been lost, although it may simply have to do woth the overwhelming preponderance of right handed hitters.
