In audio signal processing and acoustics, an echo (plural echoes) is a reflection of sound, arriving at the listener some time after the direct sound. Typical examples are the echo produced by the bottom of a well, by a building, or in a room, by the walls. A true echo is a single reflection of the sound source. The time delay is the extra distance divided by the speed of sound.

There once was a nymph named Echo. She loved to talk. Often, when Zeus would come to visit with the nymphs, Echo would distract jealous Juno when she came in search of her wayward husband. On one of these occasions, Juno grew tired of Echo's deceit. As punishment, she doomed Echo to never being permitted to speak first to another being. And even after she had been spoken to, she could never do more than repeat what had been told to her.

One day in her wanderings, Echo happened across the youth Narcissus. Narcissus was so beautiful that upon looking at his reflection in a pool, he fell in love with himself, and wasted away the remainder of his life gazing longingly at his own image. Echo stayed by him for the remainder of his days, eventually wasting away to no more than a faint voice. Today, if you call into the hills you may still hear her respond.
