No matter who you are, you live and work around other people. The whole process of interacting and getting our way is political. For instance, employees quickly learn who wields the power at work. And that is not just the CEO, it's certain managers or peers whom everyone respects (or fears) and listens to. The same could be said for life at home. Even kids learn whom they can manipulate in the family and put it to their use. Being a political animal means simply means learning the "system" and using it to your advantage...whatever that might be.

Politics is the process of working out differences between people for society to work. So everybody who functions in society and looks at how people behave and tries to influence them is a political animal. (As opposed to beating them up, which is a bully or a thug.)

Everyone believes in something. Even if you say you don't believe in anything, then that is your belief. Politics go hand in hand with beliefs. No matter who you are, you agree with or disagree with one group/party/ideology or another even if you don't let your voice be heard, you are still a political animal because you feel someway about some things.
