It means you slipped up and told something you should have never told. You may have been thinking out loud and said something to hurt someones feelings.

It means that you said something you shouldn't have without thinking. Example: "that color dress makes you look ghostly."
You just hurt a person's feelings by talking without thinking and you should "put your foot in your mouth" to prevent it from happening again.

Well, it's like when I didn't know the party was a surprise and I saw the guy at the mall and told him I would be at his house Friday. I said I would never pass up a good birthday party, and since your girl invited me... He said he had no idea what I was talking about since he had told her 2 months ago that he didn't want to have one..... I had BOTH FEET in mine trying to talk.....
