Okay. So let me first start off by saying, I'm not real good with any kind of motors. With that in mind, I started my push mower today and it sounded like it wasn't up to full speed. I mowed my grass anyway, and midway through it started making this weird noise. When I finished I turned it on it's side to look underneath it. I guess I got a rope caught on the blades, because it was wrapped around it. So I took that off. When I started it up again to see if it would make the same noise, white SMOKE came off of it. I let it smoke for a little bit to burn off what I'm thinking is oil. When I turned it off, there was these oil drip stains all over it.

Here's my questions.
1.) Was that rope supposed to be on the mower? (I never thought to look underneath it when I bought it.)

2.) Why is there oil everywhere? Did I blow a gasket?

Any advice would be greatly apprieciated!

1) No.

2) when you turned it over oil ran into areas of the engine it is not supposed to run into. Clean the spark plug (it likely has oil on it, or better just replace the spark plug) and run it. The smoke will eventually stop as the oil is burned off. Next time tip it back and block it up, not on its side.

Ok Here we go.Your mower is not up to speed because it might need a small adjustment, has a dirty filter, throttle out of adjustment,or maybe the rope was causing the slow down its hard to tell without being there.Your noise, if it was a rattling shaking noise it could mean your crankshaft is bent and out of balance. If it was a high pitch noise it could be your recoil(pull starter) clutch is going out, either one would need work at a mower shop.Next when you tip a lawnmower you always tip it so that the carburetor is always up this would eliminate any oil from getting into the carb.Once oil gets into the carb it gets ingested into the engine and what ever doesn't burn in the engine gets push into the muffler where it either sits or gets spit out the tiny muffler holes.

Did you buy it new? If so, then NO the rope thing is not suppose to be there. If you bought it used, then the rope may have been used as a temp seal(an idea) as the seal to the motor is worn out behind the blade. The seal needs replacing. Which is a bit of a job as the blade comes off and then the motor is unbolted and taken off from the top, just to work on the crankshaft seal.(engine dissassembly)
Orrr, you chopped the rope earlier and never noticed and the rope fibres themselves ruined the seal. In any case the motor has to be dissassembled. to fix it right. You need to take it to a lawn mower shop for them to do it.

1> No, the rope just got picked up by the blades, and is not supposed to be there. You did the right thing by pulling it off.
2> When you turn the mower over like that, the oil goes into places it's not normally supposed to go, and when you run it, it smokes like crazy. Ain't no big thing brudda....it'll quit.
3> Now, come mow my lawn for me.

Check your oil level to make sure you didn't lose too much. Always tip the mower with the air filter up. Any time that you reach under the mower remove the sparkplug wire. That will prevent the engine from "firing" if you turn the blade and save you a trip to the hospital.

The rope was not suppose to be on the blades you must have picked it up while mowing. The smoke is normal after you turn your mower over or to the side.
