Those images were not a random click and go take the next shot. More or less, the picture needed to have a message to it. Like when you look at the old pictures, you see the posing, clothing they wear, and so on to get the point. Like for example, Pictures in that era were rare so you needed a good shot to show something. If you were a military person who was international back then, you had to choose propper clothing and a pose that says "I'm powerful and big".
THese images do not show a true image. They only show what the person wants to show. It took time to take a photo as well but the other people have said it.

Because having your photograph taken back then was no casual event. It cost a lot of money to get a photograph, so usually there weren't re-takes, and you had to hold perfectly still for 10- 20 seconds for the image to set!

Because of the cameras used, they had to stay still for long periods of time while the photo was taken. They didn't have instant cameras like we do now. So that was the easiest position to hold. Can you imagine grinning madly? Your mouth would start to ache after a while.

Because back then, the way cameras worked meant that people had to sit and pose rigidly still for a long time while the film exposed. You try smiling for half an hour! :)

Ok, that is a good question. I imagine that having your photograp taken back then was a serious and expensive and rare occasion, so that's maybe why. Pride, awe and respect and even a little fear.

Its cause you had to stay still longer cause of the shutter speed and probably cause their teeth weren't in the greatest condition......
