Actually the WHO recommends for 2 yesr, while LLL recommends for at least 1. Both suggest if willing by both mother and child continue there after. Okay so biting , it sucks. Went through it with both of mine. But it didn't last long, for just this reason: As a prior post mentioned, if the child clamps down and won't unlatch, push the breast into the child's face. This causes him to want to take a breath and therefor unclamps as well as pulls his head away to breath! My preferred method is to tap his mouth with your pointer and middle finger and sternly say no. This does not hurt the child, but does startle them because they were not expceting it. The child will cry for a bit. Continue holding the child but don't soothe/ shhh him any farther than that (they need to understand that what they did was wrong). After 3-4 times of this and my son hasn't done it since! Good Luck!

Wow people. Do some research. It's recommended that you breastfeed for AT LEAST a year. Not 3-6 months, not until the baby has teeth. As long as the mother and baby both want to.

Anyway, to answer your question, for the fingers, say NO! and ignore him for a few minutes. With the breastfeeding, do the same but don't offer to breastfeed until the next feeding.

If his mom truly wants to quit though, he is old enough. Don't introduce a freakin' bottle at this age though, just give him a cup.

Hypermam is right! The WHO recommends breastfeeding for 12 months. I agree with Hypermam that you should push the baby's face in towards the breast if he bites; he may be very unhappy about it and even go on a hunger strike, but he will learn. Also, be sure not to reinforce the biting in any way; any kind of reaction, whether it was a giggle when he did a first gentle nibble, or a gasp now, will encourage him to do it again, as much to see your reaction as anything else. But do not give up breastfeeding unless you are both ready!

You do not need to stop breastfeeding. Breast feeding is for at least one year and then for as long as it's desirable for both mother and baby. My little one bites, too, and when that happens, we tell her no and put her down on the floor. She is learning that biting is a no no.

It is totally normal for babies to experiment with biting. It does not mean he needss to be weaned! It means it is time to learn some "nursing manners" http://www.kellymom.com/bf/older-baby/nursing-manners.html

The most immediate and best response is to actually pull the baby towards the breast when he clamps down. This will make him open his mouth wider and he will either let go or nurse normally.

All babies need to wean WHEN THEY ARE READY! Which is usually after 2 years. http://www.kellymom.com/bf/older-baby/index.html

Babies do not always understand that their teeth are in. Once they are, however, breast feeding usually has to be weaned if you cannot make the baby understand not to bite down. You are getting close enough to where the baby can have whole milk soon, check with the pediatrician, and where the baby would be weaned anyway. As far as biting your fingers, well LOL, I would tell you a couple things. First, don't put your fingers in his mouth! He has no reason to have your fingers anywhere near his mouth! Secondly, if he does bite you, try biting him back. I don't mean draw blood !! - but bite him hard enough that he can feel a little pain and see what it is like. This worked for my son and he never bit me again!
God bless, and good luck!

Its a phase they all go through, but try giving them a toddler cookie or something.. I am pretty sure you can get them from walmart and they are for teething babies.

if the baby has teeth, stop the breast-feeding! pretty soon, he's going to be able to ask for it! give him a bottle, or a sippy cup. breast-feeding at 1 yr old is only for the mother's sake, not the baby's.
