the radeon 9000pro is a agpx8 graphic cards so you need to be looking for a card with these specifications
the reason your screen is going black is probally that the acrds gpu(graphic processing unit)is starting to fail, and theres not much you can do when the card gets to this stage
as for upgrades there are many good agp cards around ,heres a few of my normal recommendations
1)256MB Sapphire Radeon X1550 (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=540214)....The SAPPHIRE ATI Radeon™ X1550 delivers all the high-end graphics features - for gaming, surfing the Internet and watching digital video - at a smart price. The Radeon X1550 series integrates with Windows Vista™ to create a premium visual experience, allows users to connect to multiple monitors and improves visual applications. Products based on Radeon X1550 graphics technology are an excellent complement to Microsoft's new 3D based operating system, allowing you to get more enjoyment out of movies, games, and digital photos.
2) 128MB XFX 6200 AGP 8x, (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=498828),the nvidia 6200 is a cut price alternative for gamersmwith full direct x 9.0c comaptibility and pixel and shader model 3.0,this is ideal for gamers on a budget, its also very quiet due to its heatsink technology, this is a good all round graphics solution
3) 256MB Palit 7300GT Sonic AGP8x (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=557236)...Beside GeForce 7300GT, 7300GT Sonic is the overclocking edition and core speed up to 400MHz and memory speed up to 1000MHz. Boasting the 3D graphics and video features of today's most advanced graphics processing units (GPUs), GeForce® 7300 GT GPU delivers ultra-realistic gaming effects and stunning, high-definition video without compromising performance. For the performance and features you need to play the latest games and enjoy home-theatre quality video, make sure your PC is equipped with a GeForce 7300 GT.
4) 128MB XFX 6800XT AGP8x (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=555359),this is my favourite agp card, for just £55 you get a good looking graphics card with a 350mhz core clock speed and a 1000mhz memory clock speed, and completed with its 8 rendering pixel pielines, this is sure to be a welcome addition to any p.c...here is its other specification....................................
Microsoft DirectX 9.0
nVidia cineFX 3.0
nVidia Dgital Vibrance Control 3.0
nVidia Intellisample 3
nVidia nView Multi-Display Technology
nVidia Pure-Video
nVidia Ultrashadow 2
nVidia Unified Driver Architecture
OpenGL 2.0
personally i would go for the 6800xt,as its got everything you need, power, pixels and pipelines, what more do you want?
i hope this helps
good luck mate!

His modern snap shots card is sufficient to play any pastime presently contained in the marketplace with optimal readability. yet when he needs some thing even better perfect then he can improve to at least one in each of those a million GB gpu's of both ATI or nvidia Geforce. that's conceivable on condition that he's utilising a private computer computing device , for laptops it truly is no longer conceivable.

Hi. Your card uses an AGP port so any upgrade will need to be AGP compatible. I would go to ATI and download the latest drivers before buying a new card. http://ati.amd.com/
