Tell them that it's the first thing that an interviewer will notice.
If that doesn't matter to them, tell them how stupid they will feel when they are around people that can speak proper grammar. I worked on my daughters all their life and now when they went to college, they thanked me. good luck

wow --- first it would depend on what grade your students are in
so not knowing what grade they are in here is a general idea
you need to make it fun -- you can read something outloud to them and mispronounce all the words
then you can start a lesson of by telling them the importance of a universal way of pronouncing words so other people can understand them and be understood.
now vocabulary is easy let the students try to stump the teacher by using a new word correctly in a sentence.
you as the teacher can make it fun by coming up with challenging words that they are not normally exposed to.
By using a word that is not used in normal everyday conversation, like behoove, the students will expand their vocabulary and enjoy stumping the teacher.

I would suggest that you tell those kids that if they don't remember or internalize their vocabulary that there are some folks in prison that didn't do such a thing either. Tell them if they don't do their lesson they could end up being inmate 466789 up in Huntsville Maximum Correctional Facility. I think you need to show them that old movie/documentary called, "Scared Straight." That should be mandatory viewing for kids!
