The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful:
Good: All the King's Men, (from All the King's Men) The Departed, (from Hong Kong's Infernal Affairs) King Kong (from previous 2 King Kong movies)
Bad: Zodiac, (from all the Zodiac movies about the serial killer)
Beautiful: Casino Royale (from original Casino Royale movie/book as most know)

NO..... I think if the movie is good enough for someone to remake then that is the best compliment the original can have. What's the saying, copying something or someone is the best form of flattery. I don't think the remakes are done any better than the originals but what they do is to bring them up to date to where the current generations maybe can understand them better, hopefully to the point that now they will go back and see the original and understand what it's all about. Good luck.

The Amityville Horror remake is awful. The original version from 1979 isn't a great movie, but it's much much better than the remake.

The remake of The Omen was very well done.

I haven't seen many bad remakes as I usually disregard remakes when choosing a film to watch. However, what can be regarded as one of the best remakes ever. Starring Humphrey Bogart as Private Eye Sam Spade and Mary Astor as the dangerously seductive Brigid O' Shaugnessy, this was not the first or the second version of Dashiell Hammet's detective/mystery novel, but the THIRD. It is, however, undoubtedly the best: The first version was released in 1931 starring Bebe Daniels and Ricardo Cortez- a valiant effort, adhering closely to the novel, but sloppier than the those that it influenced. The second version (retitled "Satan Met a Lady" and based more loosely on the novel), filmed in 1936 with Bette Davis and Warren William could be described as one of the worst remakes ever: Davis herself admitted that it as the worst film of her career. Afterwards, she sued Warner Bros. for "slavoury" with regard to the fact that due to her contract, she was not allowed refuse to appear in such mediocre films (She lost the case but incidentally, Olivia deHavilland mounted a similar case less than ten years later and won...). How's THAT for a bad remake?! The third version of The Maltese Falcon was filmed and released in 1941 under the direction of rookie John Huston. Humphrey Bogart only gained the role because George Raft turned the role down. (He did the same when offered the lead role in Casablanca....did he ever learn?!!). Bogart was not a newbie, having appeared in many gangster movies with Jimmy Cagney (and twice with the previously mentioned Bette Davis in The Petrified Forest and Dark Victory), but this was his first "good-guy" role (even if he DID have to play a little dirty to make things turn out right..!). Mary Astor, though having had won Best Supporting Actress for a magnificently bitchy performance in The Great Lie (ALSO with Bette Davis!) was finding it increasingly difficult to obtain substantial film roles and was regarded by some as a fading star. John Huston himself, was a rookie director, this being his first time. However, all this trivia aside, Huston rolled out an absolute, indisputable masterpiece! (If you haven't seen it already....you MUST! If you already have, then you know what I'm talking about. Not only is this, one of my all-time favourites (I've watched it five times since this time, last year) I believe that it is the best remake ever produced (ironic, seeing as the first version wasn't of a high standard and the second version was absolutely dismal...) It even reached #23 in the American Film Institute's "Top 100 Movies of All Time" and indeed, that is certainly saying something! Also, unless you count the TV remake of Sunset Boulevard, it is also the highest remake in the list (and IF there are any others on the list, which I doubt, they are few and far between).
To be honest, I fell that in general (in GENERAL) sequels to the average movie tend to be worse than a remake of the same movie could be. But to conclude: The Maltese Falcon II- one of the worst remakes ever.... The Maltese Falcon III--- Best Remake EVER!!

The Cheaper by the Dozen remake and its sequel do not do justice to the original. The original was so much better knowing it was based upon a real family.
