chances are the motherboard is defective.
1) is the power jack loose at all
2) remove the battery and try again'
3) did the laptop run hot? maybe it overheated. let it sit for a while and try again after it cools down
4) did you change any software or hardware
5) does it have a reset button (sometimes they do, but they are very small and hard to find. Refer to your owners manual for the option, and location

I would not recommend takign it in for service unless you have warranty on it. It will be too costly to replace the motherboard. if it is dead, sometimes people like me buy laptops for parts. ebay also is a good place to locate parts.

If you prefer not to replae the motherboard, you have to get your data off the drive. Buy a "USB to laptop" cable and plug the laptop into a desktop pc and get your stuff off the laptop drive.

here are some tips to see if it needs to go to the shop.

With AC removed
Remove Battery for 10 min
Hold down the Power Button for 2 min.
Replace Battery
Try to turn it back on.

If it comes back on - you're in luck
Otherwise it's to the shop, for either weeks, or they will tell you the mobo needs replacing.

This I know because I have fixed 3 since APRIL 07
----
That is call a soft reset for the power chip that is notorious in the cpq V2000 & HP DV1000 (i hate repairing them)

contact Compaq, and ask their support geeks they will tell you what to do.

how old is your computer?
is it still under warranty?
could be the power pack (transformer) as gone down or you have a lose power connector, there are many reasons this could happen

goto compaq website, click on support, fill out the details
