It's always "I'll Google this or let's Google-d him, and click that"... yet, are there better search engines than Google?

If it is 'the best', why is it so - what makes it so good?

I've heard of these little tips one could use to speed up their search (e.e. 'define', or adding a '+' sign etc..)

I'm sure Google must have some stiff competition...?

Ditto the vote for dogpile as it combines "all of the above" but, if you're just going to choose between Google and Yahoo! then choose sort of on the premise that the Google crawler favors the *contents* of web pages *in certain ways* while the Yahoo! crawler favors the web page titles (the "crawlers" being the software that wander about, searching for web pages to list in search results...) So, it all depends on how you want your search results...and yes, there's books on the ways you can diddle your Google search. For hints see http://www.google.com/help/cheatsheet.html

Google is the best. Yahoo Search is second. It's all about the data base. Google has the biggest and the baddest data base in the search engine world. And, it really doesn't have any rivals. Also, Google has the best tool bar. I wouldn't run a browser without it.

I think with Google its the fact that it ets straight to the point. With Yahoo and MSN you have to shiff thru the information just to find the right one because it can give you a wide range of varieties.
I mean there are tons of other search engines and each has their own little thing that their good at.

Yahoo - for pixs
MSN - ??
Dogpile - MP3
Goggle - For info

Plus in school, google is the main search engine so kids are automatically brough up with google.

Here in Ireland Google is the favourite search engine because it covers Ireland. It might depend where you are living. Computer courses here teach people to use Google. I have done 4 computer courses myself and each one had Google as the homepage. Now I use it myself.

I personally prefer Yahoo!... it tends to have more reliable results... Google has a giant database that will return irrelevant results, simply for the sake of saying the DID return some results. but in terms of searching the net, Yahoo!, Google, Live Search... they all essentially come up with the same results... google became popular solely because its very simple. (look at their homepage... nothing but a search box)

Yes, there is huge competition between Yahoo and Google, but at the moment Google is in the lead as the most popular site.

Google's main competitor is Yahoo and it is just as good if not better. From a security point of view you should treat Google like the Plague.

"Google" has just become the generic term for searching, just like "biro" for a ballpoint pen, or "hoover" for a vacuum cleaner. There are indeed other search engines that seem to work better - lots of 'em already mentioned.

Google is still the leader in terms of the internet, SEO, ads, targeted ads etc. With their up-to-date software and computers, and advanced algorithms, they will be the leaders for a long time to come.
