in art class we used a glass cutter to cut the glass partially and then we would snap it off the rest of the way. wear gloves to protect your hands because it takes some strenght to break the glass and if your not careful you will cut yourself. oh and one more thing clean the glass before you cut it because it will give you a cleaner break and you can also use a marker to mark a straight line so the end result is even then use sand paper to sand the edges of the glass that you just cut so its smooth

I've heard good things about filling the bottle with sand to dissipate vibrations and using a Dremel-type rotary tool. The nice thing about using a Dremel is you can also use it to buff the edges so you don't hurt yourself. By setting the bottle on its side in a box of sand (or similar) it will provide a more stable surface for cutting, drilling, etc. so the bottle won't be rolling around like mad. There are other ways, but this is the easiest method I've found for someone who may not want to go out and buy a half dozen (expensive) specialised glass working tools. Even if one does wind up eventually picking up some fancy scorers, nippers, and such, the rotary tool is versatile enough to still find a place in most tool kits.

Okay, I have NEVER done this myself. But my grandpa told me how he did it.... He said you filled the bottle with oil to the level you want it "split". Then he said you dipped into the oil a red hot wire. He said the oil transmitted the heat instantly to the edge of the bottle and the bottle would split cleanly at that point...
Like I said I never tried it, but that is what he told me. If you try it and it works.. let me know.

We purely fill jars with then and use them as decorations, in case you're able to locate an old glass water cooler bottle and fill that with them which would be cool. or you're able to pass to a community flea marketplace sell them.
