The idea of the light bulb was known, however, Edison perfected it. Before Edison, a light bulb would last a few seconds; not very useful. Edison's Lab (hundreds of people) spent a lot of time and money to find the perfect filament and the conditions (vacuum) that would make the bulb a real product.
Without his persistence and efforts it would take much longer to create a useful product out of the original idea.

From what I understand Edison was an inventor but also specialised in buying inventions and the rights to it...
Apparantly he bought it from a Spanish guy, a resistance wire providing light and modified it...
It is very unclear in history and these are just claims and if they are true he did well to cover them up......
But from what I understand he bought it and its rights and claimed to have invented it.
Whether he finally modified it or not, he brought it to the market and introduced the first electricity distribution system to replace gas lighting, which then had a current monopoly on the market...(which was also dangerous and costly)

Whatever people say about Edison's invensions the fact remains that he was truely a genius more because of his personal humility and forbearance than his acclaimed inventions. His wisdom proclaimed itself unwittingly when he said that all human scientific endeavors are but eighty percent perspiration and only twenty percent intuitive inspiration!

Yes, he is not fake. There are many people want to take away their invention but truth is in the history. Just like Americans did not land nor walked on the moon in 1964.
