I'm having problems w/my computer and tried to get them resolved here but they are snow balling and I am about to put it out of its' misery but want to give it one last chance. Would appreciate any input on G.S. that you may have. I know they are not cheap but I really need the help. Good or bad ,please advise.....

May fix it ( not too well ) , but yes expensive and usually takes a long time. Also they will want to sell you things you don't need.

It sounds like GS people are not trained very good which doesn't surprise me, but what I find really interesting here is something that I have known for a long time, people think other people's time is worth nothing. Someone said they get paid $6 an hour and I guess they figure that is a lot! Even if all the money went straight to the worker that would be dirt cheap for a trained person(unless you consider someone working at McD's a "trained" person). And remember Best Buy has to staff the people and all that entails (taxes, any benefits, ...), make some kind of money to stay in business.

A long time ago I was an electronic technician, and got out of it for software engineering, and back then the first thing people thought of when they thought of an electronic technician was a TV. Well I never worked on TVs because of the same reason, in 1981 they wanted to pay you about $5 an hour at the most. When normal pay for a common job was at least $6 plus full benefits, and working for the semiconductor industry in Albuquerque NM (not a high paying area) started at $9 plus full benefits (which by the way means it cost the company about double the $9). And with experience that was easily in the $15 or more. Sure I was a real technician not the swap tronics of today (there really isn't much you can fix on modern computers, you just swap out major modules, like the motherboard or graphics card), but look that was over 25 years ago and still people want to get "experienced" "trained" people for what some they pay someone to serve them fast food.

P.S. Asking a modern tech what wattage his soldering iron is is useless. For the simple reason that with modern computers the people never use a soldering iron. there just isn't anything to use them on these days. I work on all my computers since I have 30 years of hardware and software experience (including NASA level soldering training), and I haven't used my soldering iron on a computer in at least 15 years.

Find a shop in your area. The Geek Squad is a ripoff. A computer shop might not be any cheaper, but the techs who work there will fix your machine better than the Geek Squad will. Plus, you get to feel all warm and fuzzy for supporting a small business in your community.

As far as im concerned Geek Squad is a complete rip off, a job given to high schoolers that get paid $6/hr and no training. Most problems they claim to "fix" are nothing but easy driver updates and/or data transfers. If I were you i'd avoid them at all costs and post your problem with your computer on tech forums, and the best part, it's free!

they are basically
-Windows reformatters
-Motherboard swappers
-Upsell specialists

They cannot repair your computer, they send to factory for replacement motherboard or part needed (except Hard Drives)

Fancy VW Bug, A+ cerftications and uniforms are no substitute for experience.

Find a Local Tech- not a geek
Previously Geeks were smart end users. Now all of a sudden the are supposed to fix hardware?

Ask them what wattage soldering iron they are using. as a test.

the Geek- squak are a load of young kids, fresh out of high school, thinking they know everything there is to know about computers, like most on here,

If you have paid for a service and your getting no were with them then contact the shop manager, personally, put your complaint to him, tell him if you don't get anything done within the next 48 hours you will take the matter farther,

They're not all that great. It could depend on how good the crew is - there is no general idea on how skilled they are. They've fixed a few things (computer-wise) of mine, but in the end I finally realized that I could have fixed it myself all along.

They're the crew for dumb people who don't know how to fix easy things. All they do is fix simple things.

they are much cheaper than other people i have dealt with just so long as they dont make a house call. they fixed my laptop and i was very pleased. you didnt mention what is wrong with your computer.

they are a ripoff....my friend used them and they lost alot of his files and did not complete what they were supposed to do...be aware
