2. Marketing

4. Marketing
The rest of the sports networks are parrots of ESPN. They ignore hockey, so mainstream media ignores hockey.
The league doesn't help itself. If Versus is the network that we are stuck with, then the league needs to pump that network up and vice versa. They need to do things to get people excited that aren't familiar with the game. Did you ever notice that PGA has better commercials? It sounds corny, but whatever gets people to watch is what we're going to need.

because right now NASCAR is the 'in' sport. I personally don't get it though. Why the hell would you want to watch cars turn in circles for an hour?
give me hockey any day...
The papers and such down here do run hockey stories, but typically only if it's local. We don't have good newspapers, big cities with a large subscriber base have much more money to run a good paper with. Our paper is about the length of the NYT sports section some days, and with that size they can't fit in news about hockey or even real news. same with the news channels down here it seems. they're so busy with the local and sensationalist stories, they don't have time to air any real news, much less hockey news, unless it's a dedicated sports segment.
Sorry for the rant there, but the media is very frustrating these days...
edit: oh, john, they're bringing back peter puck. that should help. Little segments where an animated puck explains the rules? Great idea.

It's not necessarily ignored. The problem is that hockey is a cold weather sport. Most areas of the country don't have the weather necessary for people to play it on any kind of a regular basis. That is why it's most popular in the Northeastern United States. Also, being a winter sport means competing with basketball which is a very popular sport in the U.S. That competition comes from Pee-Wee league on up to the N.B.A.

Rhyno is right. // 1 in 10 Americans is a hockey fan because most people (unlike Baseball, Football and Basketball) did not play Hockey while they were growing up. - The numbers rise when you get into the northern states but the overall American average is 10%.
You ever take a new hockey fan to a game? They have no clue as-to what's going on and it's because they didn't grow up with it. - It's too easy to lose interest... /// On the other hand, if they are with a knowledgable friend or family-member who DID grow up with the sport and doesn't mind answering a lot of questions... they usually become life-long fans.
Some of these issues could be fixed by TV itself. - The announcers could do a better job of educating the new fans.... but it's tricky because you don't want to bore or insult the old fans... /// They should have a segment between periods just for explaining to the new-bees (the majority of Buffalo fans) what is going on. : )

I'll take that to mean that despite being the sixth most populated city in America, Philadelphia also has the distinction of being a minor news outlet?
We have NHL and AHL franchises and teams in the surrounding area are based in Reading, PA; Trenton, NJ; and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, PA.
Believe me, there is no shortage of hockey coverage. Look up the website philly.com and click on either the Daily News or the Inquirer.

Both ignored because the major sports in the U.S. are baseball, football, and basketball. Not because the youth hockey population is increasing every year.

I think outside of Olympic, NHL and NCAA hockey the US media doesn't pay much attention. There's two US teams in the Memorial Cup this year but that's pretty much ignored in the US. I don't even think you can see IIHF tournaments on US TV. Probably just too much competiton from other sports.

I dunno man. Where I live everyone airs hockey constantly, and that's all I ever hear about. I think it's becuase hockey is life in Canada, and in the United States lots of folks can't even follow the puck (remember that stupid FOX sports thing). It's all about sporting tradition. For some really weird reason the most useless boring sport to watch (baseball) is far more popular down there than the most exciting sport to watch (hockey). It's all about tradition I think.
