The first AL-NL World Series was held in 1903, with the Boston Americans (now Red Sox) prevailing over the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5 games to 3 (it was a best-of-nine format that year).
Earlier, 19th century playoffs were held as well, and among those, the first was the 1884 World Series, when the Providence Grays (NL) defeated the New York Metropolitans (American Association), three games to zero.

Japan. There has never been a true world series until the WBC in 2006. It included teams from all over the world instead of MLB which only consists of USA and 1 team from canada. (2 before Montreol switched). That is not a true world series.
