Someone answered a recent question of mine in Pets/Dogs section and justified his answer by saying that dogs were LIVESTOCK & PROPERTY.
Is this a cultural difference between the US and the UK?

No normal person considers their pets as live stock! I've just read some off his answers and he looks a complete nutter, shouting and babbling complete rubbish. Ignore people like that, they just think they are funny.

Hmmm I see he has answered below me! Say no more! A complete loony!

Hmmm I would never think of my pet as livestock or property, but I have noticed a cultural difference between the European pet owners that I know and what seems to be the majority of US pet owners.

My pets are fully fledged members of my family and I love them to bits. I'm very concerned about their health (rather take them to the vet one time too many than one time too little), keeping the safe and their overall quality of life, but they are not my "babies", and I don't call myself their "mommy".

Also there seem to be a huge difference in perception about what defines a good and responsible pet owner between Denmark (where I come from) and the US. Many of the issues that seem to be standard or at least not uncommon training/pet handling in the US are forbidden in Denmark because it is considered animal abuse (I'm not sure if they are all allowed in the US either, though). On the other hand I've lost track of the times I've got the thumbs down or ended up in seemingly endless discussions because I will not spay/neuter my dogs without serious consideration or use crate training for puppies (I'm not saying spaying/neutering is wrong or that crate training is a bad method to use on pups).

Of course there will always be people who just shouldn't have pets - either because they are ignorant, or irresponsible, or because they have a nasty attitude, and unfortunately you'll find these all over the world.

I guess they could be considered as both in legal terms, they are livestock and also belong to someone, and so are property. In our home, our animals are classed as part of the family and pets. I don't think it is a cultural thing - it depends on how pets are viewed by individuals.

Yes I think there is a cultural difference between the UK and the USA. However in my opinion people are people the world over and hold differents points of view. I think pets are part of the family and some people would say that is a UK attiude.

Legaly in the US pets are property, culturally they are closer to children. There are some states changing the legal definition to "guardian" to reflect this cultural difference. But that legaly means a temparary cartaker who's caretaking rights can be removed at any time - scary stuff to many of us who care for an animal till death do us part....

i've got self assurance they could be considered the two way. you won't have the ability to flow horses in a farm animals trailer because of the fact they are going to be harm, the pony you holiday maximum is your puppy. yet there are herds that i think of are considered farm animals. My family contributors raised horses in Va. for some years yet ours have been all pets. I wasn't able to finding a sturdy websight however.

My pets are neither livestock or property. They are fully fledged members of my family. I dont think its moral to class something that lives as property. And livestock is for eating. I dont intend to eat my dogs, cats or rats.
Livestock could be sheep for their meat or wool, chickens again for meat or eggs. Any animal that you keep for purposes like that are livestock.
The word "pet" is an indearing word that means to love or means "beloved".
I dont "own" my dog. I chose them to come and be a part of my family.

I class my cat as a pet and one of the family . Live stock to me is more farming animals . I guess my cat is my property but I still use the word pet. However some people do actually use work dogs so maybe they do see them more as live stock .

I own my dog in that I am responsible for her, and can sell her if I want to(though I would NEVER!) but she's more of my best friend, much more than my couch of course! She's a living thing! She has emotions, not as complex as people, but emotions none the less, so dogs are not to be treated as just "objects". They need to feel like they belong, not just like a bunch of cows or sheep that you go out and just feed everyday, but dogs are much more a part of my life.
