Religion. No doubt about it!!!

Yet, some people still want to live the great lie

That has to be a toss up between religion, science, freedom/democracy and consumerism - do you have a four sided coin?

- religion because many people accept it blindly - if many of these concepts were introduced to us as new today, we would laugh and say "don't be ridiculous!"
- science because people accept the knowledge (power) of those who say that they are at the top of this field. They make it so complex so that we give up asking questions and we accept that they know best - even though history always proves science wrong.
- we use the terms freedom and democracy to make ourselves feel good about our lives but don't ask often enough how free we are or what democracy actually means. We are too easily convinced that we should be grateful because there are people in the world worse off than us.
- consumerism because we spend our money on things we don't need in the belief that these things will make our lives better. But they don't, so instead of finding another route to happiness we go out and buy more things... and so the cycle continues.

I don't know which is the biggest con, but I'd say that right now consumerism is the one we question the least.

Robert S. deRopps said organized religion is the oldest con game, and he noted that is the safest one, because no one asks for a refund when he is not satisfied with the phony heaven for which he paid preachers for years. My oldest sister may give $46,000 to her church if she lives as long as our Aunt Helen. For that price, I bought a nice watch that benefits me much more than a childish fantasy.

Altruism. The concept of self-sacrifice for its own sake is often claimed but rarely, if ever, practised. If an action gives you any benefit whatsoever, it is not altruism. You must lose both in matter and in spirit and resent every second of it to qualify as true altruism. Altruism is held to be the standard by which to live, and to practise it consistently would lead very quickly to death.

"Christ, in terms of the christian philosophy, is the human ideal. He personifies that which men should strive to emulate. Yet, according to the christian mythology, he died on the cross not for his own sins but for the sins of the non-ideal people. In other words, a man of perfect virtue was sacrificed for men who are vicious and who are expected to accept that sacrifice. If I were a christian, nothing could make me more indignant than that: the notion of sacrificing the ideal to the non-ideal, or virtue to vice. And it is in the name of that symbol that men are asked to sacrifice themselves for their inferiors. That is precisely how the symbolism is used."

There's only one choice, everything else pales in comparison.... and its been going on since ceremonial burials were first discovered among homo sapiens around 100,000 years ago. The time that belief in an afterlife, supernatural deities and other 'religious' phenomena took hold over our primitive barbaric ancestors.
