Do you have any kids? Virginia is the perfect place to raise kids. Richmond is average in economy. Like everyone else says, Northern Virginia is expensive! Plus traffic is a nightmare!!!!! Another thing about Northern Va is that most of the people up there are snoodieeeeeeeee. Their nose are so high in the air. But you do get 4 seasons, friendly people, and great school systems. Southern hospitality with a Northern flavor! Plus, we have the Atlantic Ocean, & Mountains. A little bit of everything here. Welcome!

Girl, I hear ya on leaving Michigan. I left 2 years ago, moved to Arizona and never looked back. Now living in the desert suits me fine but it isnt for everyone.
Virginia is a beautiful state, my ancestors landed there in droves and my mom was born there at the Marine base.
The cost of living is high though anywhere on the east coast, except for in the deep south. But I am sure there has to be some affordable areas there.
Check out realtor.com - see what the prices for houses are. There are usually some cost of living tools there too. Even if you arent looking to buy a house, you can at least see how much a gallon of milk costs. Also, check out Monster.com and see how much jobs in your field (or planned field) are paying.
Did you know Jack White from the White Stripes left Michigan and moved to Nashville becasue he "couldnt take the negativity: Ha! So true!
Good luck on your adventure!

Virginia's a pretty big state. The area around DC is pretty vibrant, but Appalachia has been stagnant for quite some time.
I think the best place to live in Virginia is Charlottesville! Nice college town with a growing upper-middle class population. Also, it was rated as the #1 city in America a couple years ago!

Virginia is one of the best place to live. I've been living here for 17 years, and VIRGINIA BEACH is the best place to be. The beach is one of the attractions here. You would probably find a job that starts between $8-12. A decent single apartment here could cost you from $500 to 700. Military is the main source that drives the economy here

I live in Tidewater- the South Eastern part. We just moved back to the area a year ago and a lot has happened in the 7 years we were gone. There is a lot of new construction, the average gas price is $2.99. In our area we have a lot of military and military supporting businesses. There are a lot of government agencies, a huge medical school in Norfolk and lots of other home ported businesses. I feel there are a lot of job opportunities. Norther Va is close to DC. So, there are a lot of job opportunities there too- but it is super expensive. The average gas cost up there is $3.25. I don't know that any of that helps you- but there it is. Good luck!

Richmond. The cost of living anywhere in the eastern part of the state is out of sight.
