I think you are referring to the type of sprinkler that has wheels and connects to a garden hose. The purpose is that it will move around your yard over a period of time and water a much larger area without human intervention.
Here is an example, they are referred to as "Travelling Sprinklers"

This would be in contrast to one of the regular oscillating sprinklers. You put that kind of a sprinkler in one spot on your lawn, let it run for an hour or two, and then you have to go out later on and move it to another spot.
