maybe u need to check its power options, try changing a few options and applying then changing them back to where u want them and applying .. or it could be overheating .. and ive run into several instances of laptop dedicated power control software being buggy and conflicting with the operating systems native controls ... maybe check the manufacturer site for an update on that ..

my laptop does this too. It doesn't go through windows shutdown or anything, all of sudden it is 'lights out' and the thing just shuts off. I think it does this because it is over heating. I started noticing the problem when I installed a new faster hard disk in my laptop. The new laptop has a high spindle speed, 7200 rpm, and thus can run very hot. I can feel right now how hot my laptop is while I am resting it on my lap.
I know this isn't due to a virus because I don't get any error messages and it happens all the time when I am using Linux, a non-windows operating system .

It would be helpful to know how far into the boot process your laptop goes prior to shutting down, for example-
1) Do you hear the post beep when it goes through the BIOS check?
2) Do you see the XP or operating system splash screen with logo?
3) Do you get to the Welcome screen or sign on screen
4) Does your system just loop restart once it shuts down?
5) How old is your battery?
6) If you turn on your system and tap the F8 key do you get to the alternate starting menu with Safe Mode shown on the top of the list?
6a) If so, when you highlight safe mode and press enter, select the operating system and hit enter again are you able to get your desktop in safe mode? Or what happens?
7) Do you receive error messages, or a countdown prior to shutdown occuring?
8) Did you add any new hardware or software prior to this issue occuring?
9)Have you gone into the BIOS and reset to default settings and then try to boot up?
If you can answer these or at least some of them it can make it easier to troubleshoot your issue
Here and willing to help with more information from you

the question is , does it shutdown normally , or just shut down as if you removed the battery suddenly
if it shuts normally , this is may be coz of many reasons
1- there's a virus so check ur antivirus
2-somebody has been cracking ur computer so check ur firewall and antivirus too
3-the power option may be is swtiched to shut down after a certain period
and if it just shuts , this may be for a wrong installation for a driver or a software
i hope this helps

Sounds like overheating maybe. Make sure you have plenty of ventilation space and never use the laptop on a soft surface such as bed or pillow. Aside from that, check your manufacturer's web site. Good Luck

It might be overheating. I had a Toshiba and that's what it did. So try (I know this sounds stupid) putting an ice pack where it fells hot on the bottom. After you do this and it turns back on it was overheating.
