I teach School bus driving, and we have a parallel parking maneuver we do. Here's how we do it.
First, we pull up past the space. Then we back up, straight, until our rear wheel is next to the front of the space.
Next, we turn sharp to the right, and look out at the left side view mirror. When you see the right rear corner of the space, straighten out your wheels (the car is going diagonally, but not turning).
Now, watch for the front left corner of the space. Decide where is should be before you turn to the left. This part takes some experimenting and possibly some cone run overs.
Once you've turned to the left, stay turning until the front left corner is close to lining up to the left front corner of your car.
Now, that doesn't seem very simple, and it requires you to find a couple of reference points. But maybe it will help.

pull up next to car, mirror to mirror, start to back up, when door edge is near rear bumper, crank the wheel, watch your front end, then crank the other way, watch car in front and back and pray. Good Luck.

i tilted the passenger's mirror downwards so i could look at it and see my rear passenger tire and the edge of the curb, which made it a lot easier. cheating a little, sure. but i passed easily.
