I found some N Gage games for sale online and I was just wondering what it is exactly? These games almost lead you to believe that each game is an individual handheld unit, or are these cartridges you put into a unit like you do with the DS?

The N Gage is a collossal failure and waste of money.
I believe it was released in 2003 or 2004, and was intended to be Nokia's entry into the gaming industry.
The N Gage was meant to be a mobile phone/portable game system.
However, it was:
A) very poorly designed - you had to hold the unit on edge to talk on the phone, and you had to remove the battery to insert or remove a game. In addition, the screen was taller than it was wide, which hampered the view and gameplay of any games that were played.
B) Failed to garner third party support - which equals a severe lack of games.

As a result, there were no quality games and no one bought the thing.

Nokia tried to salvage the N Gage by redesigning it half a year after it's debut into the N Gage QD, (fixing the insertion/removal of games, longer battery life, don't have to hold the unit sideways to use the phone, more ergonomic design...) but it didn't work and the system bit the dust shortly thereafter.

In short, the N Gage is nothing at all like a Nintendo DS, or any other handheld system out there.
So for your sake, please don't buy it.

It is for Nokia's hand-held gaming. Nokia has discontinued the N-Gage. You can find out more about this hybrid gaming phone using the link below. You can't play these games on DS or PSP. Only Nokia's N-Gage phones can play these games.
