You would think that the law makers would wake up and realize that the more visible you are at night, the safer you would be.

All led's are not illegal. You can use white and amber on the front as constant running lights, or you could also use amber as blinkers on the front or rear.

On the back, you can use white on your plate. also on the back you can use red led's anywhere to make yourself more visable.

What kind of LEDs are you talking? Surely they allow LED headlight and taillight.

Being more visible doesn't make you safer as the average night time non-commercial driver is so drowsy that s/he is as likely to target the brightest object as try to avoid it. How do you think police officers get killed during pullovers? The lights are so bright that it is almost impossible to see anything else and your eyes, and therefore aim, is drawn to them like a moth.

If NJ doesn't allow any LEDs then sales on European high end models must be down in the state while the locally owned sealed beam manufacturers are having a surge in sales.

It's illegal in a lot of states simply because most people see it as a distraction. In Illinois (where I live) not only is it considered a distraction, but it's also against the law because people say your car may look like a police car and it could confuse someone.

I agree. However the lawmakers see exterior auxillary lighting as a distraction to other drivers. Also, if the lights flash, people could think you are an emergency vehicle. Impersonating an emergency vehicle is a crime. I guess I can see it both ways, but instead of specifying certain cases, the lawmakers just said "screw it, let's just make it all illegal."

Dot approved lights are legal. Others are not.
Use of colored lights is restricted / regulated.
You can't use blue. Police & Fire, ambulances.
Purple is for funerals.
Red to the rear only (stop/turn/tail)

As far as being safe, my experience is that they don't see you during the DAY.

thats an exelent analegy, but some dead head can't see past their nose, and get away from the opinion, that it is also a distraction, and would cause others to check out your bike, not pay attention to the road, and have a wreck.
