how does power assisted steering work, and what are the signs that it is failing?

i ask this as the power steering in my car sometimes goes heavy when im turning

Signs of steering failure leaks on ground whine noise comming from the power steering pump. Fluid level getting low in the pump. Dry no fluid at the pump.
The pump pumps fluid to the steering box or rack inside either is a ram or piston that acts both ways to pressureized fluid that is controled by what we call the spool valve as you turn the wheel side to side the spool valve provides pressure to one side or the other of the rack or steering box to help you turn the wheel

power steering works by hydraulically enhancing the motion of the worm gear in your steering box.
If it is going bad it will do one of two things, it will either whine real loud or it will leak fluid and you will have to constantly top off the reservoir. You should not have any problems if it has been kept full of fluid. If it is bad.......you will know....it will be really really hard to turn the steering wheel, as if the engine was off. It works by a pump opening and closing pistons and a sign it's failing is tight steering
