The top journalism school in Australia is Charles Sturt University at Bathurst in NSW. Macquarie Uni comes a good second. Melbourne has some great universities but I don't think any of them are noted for tourism. Southern Cross in northern NSW and James Cook in Townsville both do tourism.
You will need to be in Melbourne to learn to be the subject of abuse by thousands when you make a stupid decision that costs their team a goal. Good luck, you might be a rarity - an unbiased umpire who knows the rules.
As far as renting in Melbourne, many of the inner suburbs are popular with students as they all have good public transport. You will probably need to share to afford anything reasonable.

sounds like a great plan, although you ll have to work mighty hard to realise it..
i think someone already mentioned that the umpiring side of things will invlove significant amounts of unpaid work.
secondly, accommodation in melbourne will be expensive. of course, if you choose to study i little further from the city, in a greensborough or something, then you wont be too badly off. in any case, you ll have to be doing plenty of work (i assume you arent qualified to do anything that pays mighty reasonably).
thirdly, journalism in melbourne is becoming more and more prestigious at a serious speed. being a budding journalist myself, i can say with some (some) degree of authority that it is quite hard to find a good spot in a respectable university. naturally, of course, there are ways to bend the system and get your way, but that usually involves a change in lifestyle, and a slight change in the grand plan. if you did exceptionally well in school, it will be no problem (top 15% should be enough)
structureless answer, i know.. thats all i can think of right now
enjoy

Get a Melbourne newspaper....start checking places out. Take a trip there soon and scope the place out. As a uni student, you may not be able to afford a place on your own. Why not go to Bond Uni? It's closer to you and they have a good program. I did graduate work there. Great school.

Hi,
If you're looking for something cheap and close to the city Caulfield area is good if you're using public transport - anywhere you live you're near a train station.
Western Suburbs are a lot cheaper (Altona) but public transport is a problem there. You might try Collingwood area but it might be too expensive.

i live in qld too. i go to uni at uq, which i think is a great school. whats the need to get to melbourne - is it for afl? you mention its not for a few years - why dont you go to melbourne and try umpiring for a bit and come back to qld and do uni. i think it would be quite difficult to combine uni and trying to become a top umpire?? not sure but if it involves working your way to the top then theres probably a lot of unpaid work involved - something probably not that attractive while at uni. good luck !

Now I could be wrong BUT: If I remember correctly the first time I heard "AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE OI OI OI" was at our own Sydney Olympics in 2000. It was the cheer our swimming team yelled out while sitting, jumping and dancing in the stands at the aquatic centre and cheering on their team-mates who were racing. One person with an extremely LOUD voice leads the chant. "Aussie Aussie Aussie! (leader) Oi oi oi! (crowd) The first line may or may not be repeated. Aussie! (leader) Oi! (crowd) Aussie! (leader) Oi! (crowd) Aussie Aussie Aussie! (leader) Oi oi oi! " (crowd) Juan Antonio Samaranch pleased the Sydney home crowd by personally leading one of these cheers at the Closing Ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

I suggest Yarraville, Seddon, Newport or Footscray.
They are in the western suburbs, but close to the city, which makes rent there cheaper than the inner city suburbs.

If you're looking for something cheap near the city, you may have a bit of trouble!! I would possibly look at share housing or something... Try this:
http://www.domain.com.au/Public/SearchResults.aspx?mode=share&Refine=1&state=VIC&areas=Bayside%2cEast&sub=Prahran%2cKew%2cAlbert+Park&ssubs=1&from=0&to=0&proptypes=&ptdes=All%20Property%20Types&searchterm=kew,%20prahran,%20albert%20park
Or if you do have your heart set on renting yourself...
http://www.realestate.com.au/cgi-bin/rsearch?a=s&cu=fn-rea&s=vic&ss=&ag=&t=ren&snf=rbs&chk=0&lead=&ty=&tb=kew%2C+albert+park%2C+south+melbourne%2C+st+kilda%2C+CARLTON%2C+CARLTON+NORTH%2C+hawthorn&u=HAWTHORN&is=1&pm=50&px=150&pme=50&pxe=150&minbed=&maxbed=&cat=&p=30&o=def
