Has to be Robert De Niro and I would say his roles in The Awakening and Goodfellas are poles beyond poles apart. In one, he is a dementia sufferer who is mute and has to be fed by nurses and lives in an asylum. In the other, he is Jimmy Conway, a well known made man, who enjoys stamping on people heads and burying people in the Nevada desert.

Tell me who can top that?? He has so many other completely different roles, I could be here all day!

Tom Hanks / The first roll was his portrayal of a gay, educated, classical music loving lawyer suing his own law firm for firing him for having aids in his academy award winning role in Philadelphia.

The second role was as Forest Gump where he played a mentally challenged man who lived a very charmed and fruitful life, mostly through mischance and absurd luck. Another academy award winning performances, though worlds apart in character similarity.
