I read a plurb in the paper about a new planet, as big as a gas giant but water ice (as appose to mercury ice?) but closer to its sun than earth to ours?

Water is frozen from extreme pressure I believe it said.

Anyhow, I can't remember much about it, but it was interesting. Recycling was taken out this morning so the paper is gone.

Can someone tell me more about it or at least info so I can search it myself. Searching "Liquid Giant Planet" didn't get me very far.

Sounds like you're talking about the "new" planet designated as Gliese 581c. The reason it's so interesting is that it appears to have some characteristics similar to Earth, like the presence of water and temperatures within limits that could allow life to develop.

Here's more about Glies 581c

PARENT STAR -- A small red dwarf type star designated Gliese 581

DISTANCE FROM PARENT STAR -- 6-million miles

DISTANCE FROM EARTH -- 20.5 light years

DIAMETER -- 12,000 miles (Jupiter is 88,700 miles, Earth 7,926 miles)

MASS -- 2.94^25 kg (Earth is 5.877^24 kg)

TEMPERATURE -- Between about 32 F to 102 F

LENGTH of YEAR -- 13 days (Earth is 365 days)

a gas giant(sometimes also known as jovian planets after the planet jupiter)is a large planet that is not primarily composed of rock or solid matter.there are four gas giants in our solar system, jupiter, saturn, uranus and neptune.pluto is also included but is rejected coz its smaller than the moon.uranus and neptune may be considered a separate subclass of giant planet,'ice giants',or'uranian planets' as they are mostly composed of ice, rock as well as gases of water, ammonia and methane, unlike the "trditional"gas giants jupiter or saturn.however they share the same qualities of the lack of the solid surface their differences stem from the fact that their propotion of hydrogen and helium is lower, due to their greater distance from the sun.

i hope this helps.

thnx.
