I think you should be able to have whatever you want as an avatar. It doesn't necessarily have to be a person's face. If you like shoes, you should be able to get a shoe as an avatar. An avatar should express what is central to your interests. Thus, it could be a shoe, a baseball, a hocky stick, a horse, a tractor, or a musical G-clef.

That would be nice as I love shoes and it seems as though we get to select everything else but I don't believe in your avatar being "shown" that your feet can be seen thus no shoe selection.
